Antipop Consortium is one of the most inventive underground hip hop crews in the early 2000's. The Consortium was formed in fall 1997 to turn the commercial Hip Hop scene on its head. It consisted of the three vocalists (Beans, High Priest and M. Sayyid) which come from the New York street poetry scene and producer Earl Blaize in the background. After a series of cassette only releases on the own label Antipop Recordings and some underground singles the label Ark 75 released the group's debut album 'Tragic Epilogue' in 2000. Their music is bridging the gap between Hip Hop and Intelligent Dance Music. Because of that avantgarde electronic label Warp Records, known for releasing such artists as Aphex Twin or Autechr.

Tragic Epilogue is the first studio album by American hip hop group Antipop Consortium. It was released on 75 Ark on February 22, 2000.[1] The group's member Beans described it as 'a eulogy to the end of hip-hop'.[2]
Critical reception[edit]
James P. Wisdom of Pitchfork gave the album a 6.5 out of 10, saying: 'It’s an auspicious debut, but one that's more likely to draw your attention to the band's future than to send you scattering for spare change to pick it up.'[7] Ron Hart of CMJ New Music Report called it 'a disjointed mindfuck of a rap album that aims to completely throw off your equilibrium.'[5]
The Wire named it the record of the year in its annual critics poll.[8] In 2015, Fact placed it at number 75 on the '100 Best Indie Hip-Hop Records of All Time' list.[9]
